Mauna Loa Observatory on the island of Hawaii has been measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in earth's atmosphere since the 1950's. The observatory is 3,400 meters, or 11,000 feet, above sea level. The undisturbed air, remote location, and minimal influences of vegetation and human activity are well-suited for monitoring atmosphere components, including those that may cause to climate change.
