Homework Question Assignment 1

For homework question assignments, you respond to targeted homework questions based on articles, videos and/or research that relate to learning goals 1-6 in the syllabus. These are low stakes assignments designed to help you engage with the material. I will mark whether you attempted the questions and a good faith effort is all I ask for at this point. These may be informally hand written, typed or spoken expositions such as bullet points. They are due at the beginning of class before our class discussion, so you may want a second copy, for example by taking a picture of your work. There is no late work accepted, but the lowest two homework question assignments can be dropped.

Due Thursday August 18:

  1. Read the two articles listed on the webpage from the perspective/lens of someone searching for theoretical and critical approaches for gender and popular culture. Create a list of all the approaches mentioned. Be sure to include items from the sections on "How do feminist researchers study gender" and "Feminist Approaches to Research" as well as items in other sections.
Note: I would suggest making a bullet point list as you are reading, if that meshes with your reading style.
  2. In your own words, after reading the two articles, what does it mean that gender is socially constructed?
  3. Both articles discuss the power of media/popular culture in activism related to gender and sexuality. Which example (or examples) from these articles related to activism in popular culture did you find most compelling?
  4. Name at least two items from each article (so you will have at least four total-two from each article) that you found interesting, that you disagreed with, and/or that you had a question on.
