HW 1 - Must be turned in at the beginning of class on 10/21
as we will go over these then.
Volume Decompositions
Use this figure (a square pyramid inside a cube)
and Geoblocks or models that you build
to give a plausible explanation of why the
volume of a square pyramid is one-third the height times the base.
Can you find a similar decomposition
relating a rectangular box and a rectangular pyramid?
Explain.
Can you find a similar decomposition relating
a rectangular box and a triangular prism? Explain.
A ribbon that is wrapped around a box can be removed without cutting,
stretching, or untying it (see below). Try to do so with an actual
ribbon on a box. Then model this situation geometrically and
explain why it works. It may be easier to explain first with a rectangle.
Read 6.7 and do (by hand) 6.7 numbers 5 and 6
Bring a baggy t-shirt to class that will fit over what you will
wear.
