A
Mathematician Who is Top of The Line
By:

I have studied
many women mathematicians here at Appalachian State University, and have seen
the difficulties they have experienced because of their gender. In the class, Women in Mathematics, I
have seen that women can do math.
We overlook so many great women mathematicians in education. For instance, how many women do you
hear about in calculus class? I
just hope that we can bridge the gap between women and math.
This is why I
decided to write about such an excellent woman, Karen E. Smith. She is the very top of her field in
tight closure, and can probably out smart many men in math. Her work has lead to great
accomplishments. Smith mentions
that she would rather be remembered for her mathematics, than for her
teaching. She has a passion for
math, is a pro at it, and has not been affected by those who tried to
discourage her. If you research
her further, you will probably see math in a different light, just like I did.
