Presentation Title: How to Calculate Derivatives on a Surface (and Why it's Useful)
Abstract
Let's consider three seemingly unrelated scenarios: (1) predicting how a cancer tumor will develop, (2) visualizing a frog developing its spot pattern, (3) approximating where the boundary of a brain is in the individual slices of a CAT scan. What do these three scenarios have in common? They can all be modeled through numerical simulations that calculate derivatives restricted to the tumor/animal form/image region boundary. In this talk, we will discuss a framework to accomplish this calculation (the Fast Orthogonal Gradients Method) and pair it with a numerical technique for our computations (the Radial Basis Functions-Finite Difference Method). We will end the discussion with a demonstration of the method's convergence.
