Syllabus	Objectives A careful study of algebraic structures, techniques, and applications. When appropriate, compare/connect material to the secondary curriculum. Goals Understand algebraic objects and their properties. Learn the basic proof techniques of modern algebra. Develop historical context for modern algebra. Topics Fundamentals: basic logic, sets, mappings, binary operations, relations. (Chapter 1) Integers: induction, divisibility, prime factors & divisors, congruence. (Chapter 2) Groups: definition & properties, subgroups, cyclic groups, isomorphisms, homomorphisms. (Chaper 3) Permutations Groups: permutations, normal subgroups, factor groups. (Chapter 4) Rings, Integral Domains, and Fields. (Chapter 5) if time allows Prerequisite MAT 2240, Intro to Linear algebra

Generic Comments	If you have trouble with a concept, come in for help. Don't wait to prove you don't understand on a quiz or test. Attendance is not required. However, the only way to learn is through active participation. Tests can be made up only if arranged before. Quizzes cannot be made up. A cell phone ringing during class will have dire consequences.
