Fall 2016 Scholars Biographies




Daniel Avila is from Smithfield, NC where he attended Smithfield-Selma High School and graduated in 2015. He is majoring in computer science and his favorite subject is mathematics. He enjoys playing soccer, guitar, and billiards. He decided to pursue an education in computer science, because he has always loved computers and wanted to learn how to program. He chose ASU, because of the mountainous terrain and the athletics.



Dylan Basilice is from Harrisburg, NC where he attended Hickory Ridge High School and graduated in 2015. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is mathematics. He enjoys listening to music and watching movies, especially action and comedies. He decided to pursue his current major, because he has always been interested in computers, and he wants to use computers for something that our bodies cannot be used for. He chose ASU because of the location and the colder weather year-round.



Jonathan Brotherton is from St. Petersburg, FL where he attended Caldwell Career Center Middle College High School where he graduated from in 2014. He is majoring in Computer Science, and his favorite subject is Math. He enjoys playing basketball, listening to hip-hop, watching horror movies, and playing Super Smash Bros. Melee. He decided to pursue an education in Computer Science, because he has had an interest in computers from a very young age. He chose ASU, because he has been here before, the area is very beautiful, and there is always something to do around here.



Gurney Buchanan is from Wilkesboro, NC where he attended Millers Creek Christian High School and graduated in 2015. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is computer science. He enjoys all kinds of technology and occasionally playing volleyball. He decided to pursue computer science, because he has always had an interest in computers and enjoys tinkering with them. He chose ASU because it is close to home, they have a good computer science program, and he enjoys the area.



Stephen Bunn is from Rocky Mount, NC and attended Nash Community College from which he graduated in 2013. He is a computer science majori, and his favorite subject is science. Stephen's interests include story writing, philosophy, film, production, world travel, application development, web development, poetry, physics, BCI Development, martial arts, and art. He chose computer science because of Moore's Law and the idea that computer science is the most raw and practical use of mathematics and physics combined. He chose ASU because of the small class sizes and accessibility of professors.



Russell Chamberlain is from Burnsville, NC and graduated from Scattergood Friend's School in 2006. He is a math and physics major. In Russell's free time, he enjoys playing soccer as well as science fiction works by Asimov, Heinlein, and Bradbury. He also enjoys european-style board games, juggling, and anti-capitalist philosophy. Russell sites the work of Carl Sagan and Robert Heinlein as influence for his academic interests. He chose ASU, because he wanted to be part of a more focused learning community.



Bryce Cloniger is from High Point NC where he attended Ledford Senior High School and graduated in 2015. Bryce is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is science. He enjoys playing in the marching band here at ASU and also enjoys visual arts such as drawing. He decided to pursue computer science, because he has always had a passion for computers, and having a degree in the field of computer science interests him greatly. He chose ASU, because he loves the mountains and many of his friends also attend ASU.



Dalton Cook is from Spruce Pine, NC where he attended Mitchell High School and graduated in 2008. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is computer science. He enjoys anime, watching movies and TV series, playing video games, and programming. He chose to pursue computer science because of the job stability, and he has enjoyed working with computers since a young age. He chose ASU because of the location of the university and all of the college graduates in his family have attended ASU.



Jonathan Costner is from Lincolnton, NC and attended West Lincoln High School where he graduated in 2015. His major is computer science and his favorite subject would be either science or history. He enjoys watching films, listening to music, and prop making. He chose to pursue an education in computer science because of his love for technology. He chose ASU because of the beautiful campus setting.



Caleb Davis is from Vacaville, CA where he attended Woods Charter School and graduated in 2012. He is majoring in mathematics, and his favorite subject is mathematics. He enjoys anything to do with music. He decided to pursue his major, because he has always enjoyed math. He chose ASU, because he wanted to get away from his family during college, and he has never lived in the mountains before.



Nathan Davis is from Apex, NC where he attended Apex High School and graduated in 2006. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is programming. He enjoys playing video games, board games, and Sci-fi/Fantasy. He decided to pursue his major, because he enjoys working with computers, and the career field has good opportunities. He chose ASU because of the smaller class sizes and the beautiful location.



Lee Fisher is from Salisbury NC and graduated from Gray Stone Day School in 2013. Lee is a mathematics major and enjoys listening to music, reading, and playing video games in his free time. He discovered his love for mathematics in high school and soon found himself thinking about mathematics in his spare time and in other classes. This was when Lee decided to commit to math as a major. Lee decided to attend ASU, because he enjoys the cold mountain weather and I quote, "wearing good looking coats!".



Tamarcus Garcia is from Raleigh, NC and graduated from Sanderson High school in 2013. He is a computer science major, and his favorite subject is game development. Tamarcus enjoys gaming, playing sports, hip hop music, and Dark Knight movies. He chose ASU, because it provided the knowledge needed for game development. He chose ASU because of the distance from home and change in culture.



Claire Harris is from Lake Toxaway, NC where she attended Rosman High school and graduated in 2015. She is majoring in geology, and her favorite subject is science. She enjoys hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and sewing. She decided to pursue geology, because the earth is the most incredible mystery and she wants to work with it for the rest of her life. She chose ASU, because she was attracted to the size and atmosphere of ASU, and she loves the outdoors and the area with hiking and skiing.



Nadine Lambert is from Asheboro, NC and attended Southwestern Randolph High School in 2013. She is majoring in general mathematics with a computation concentration. Her favorite subjects are math and computer science, and she enjoys running in her free time. Nadine has always loved mathematics and after taking Computer Science 1440, she decided that a computation concentration was perfect for her. She chose ASU because of the location and because of the positive experience she had being in the STEP/Summer Bridge program.



Wilton Latham is from Fort Bragg, NC where he attended Zebulon B. Vance High School where he graduated in 2014. He is double majoring in mathematics and computer science. He enjoys army ROTC, listening to jazz music, and The Lord of the Rings. He decided to pursue mathematics and computer science, because he wanted to write programs and solve problems from the eye of a mathematician. He chose ASU, because he enjoys the mountainous landscape and the adventure that is at hand with the landscape.



Thomas Lawing is from Belmont, NC where he attended South Point High School and graduated in 2015. He is a computer science major, and his favorite subject is computer science. He enjoys football, basketball, Marvel movies, LOTR series, mainstream music, and watching ESPN. He chose computer science, because his dad majored in computer science and he has always thought computers were interesting. He chose ASU, because the cold weather, the distance from home is just right, he had friends going to school here, and the computer science program is very good.



Evangeline Luciano is from Kill Devil Hills, NC where she attended First Flight High School and graduated in 2014. Evangeline is a computer science major, and her favorite subject is math. She enjoys skiing, badminton, kayaking, playing the cello and trumpet, drawing, and color guard. She decided to purse computer science, because she really enjoys coding, and she likes to think logically and is a great problem solver. She chose ASU because of the mountains and the ASU campus.



Jubal Martin is from Chapel Hill, NC where he attended Hunt High School and graduated in 2013. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is physics. He enjoys hiking, Steam gaming, and soccer. He chose computer science because of the availability of work and the video games. He chose ASU because of the mountains, snow, the distance from home and the friends that were going here.



Austin Meadows is from Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from East Forsyth High School in 2012. He is an actuarial science major, and his favorite subject is mathematics. He enjoys incredibly bad movies, fiddling with computer parts, playing in a band with his friends, swimming, and hiking. Austin has always liked the completely objective aspect of mathematics. After taking a calculus AP course in high school, he was introduced to actuarial science and once he learned that ASU provided it as a major, he was sold attending class here.



Gabriel Mercer is from Pasadena, CA where he attended John Muir High School and graduated in 2007. He is currently majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is computer science. He enjoys hiking, hunting, and gaming. He decided to pursue computer science, because he has always been fascinated with technology, and he wants to create new technologies in the future. He chose ASU, because it's in a unique location, and the student community/faculty are very passionate about what they do.



Sergei Miles is from Wilkesboro, NC where he attended Wilkes Central High School and graduated in 2015. He is majoring in mathematics, and his favorite subject is calculus. He enjoys playing any kind of sport, playing his trumpet, and doing school work. He decided to pursue an education in mathematics, because he enjoyed his math courses in high school. He chose ASU, because he loves the snow fall here since he is attracted to the ski slopes.



Sierra Milosh is from Morehead City, NC where she attended West Carteret High School and graduated in 2014. She is double majoring in mathematics and applied physics; her favorite subject is analytical physics. She enjoys being active, listening to live music, cooking, and having conversations with intelligent people. She decided to double major, because she has always liked the way things work the way they do which made both physics and mathematics seem like the right choice. She chose ASU, because it's easy to make new friends on a daily basis, the music scene in Boone is very good, and the professors are very approachable.



Lauren Murray is from Brevard, NC where she attended Brevard High School and graduated in 2014. She is majoring in mathematics with a concentration in Statistics; her favorite subject is mathematics. She enjoys volleyball, cooking, crafting, skiing, hiking, and camping. She chose mathematics as a major, because she had great high school teachers who got her interested in math. She chose ASU because of the location within the mountains, and it is a perfect distance away from home.



Cameron Nordan is from Franklin, NC where he attended Franklin High School and graduated in 2012. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is mathematics. He enjoys snowboarding, cooking, hiking, and playing sports. He decided to pursue his current major, because he has always had a niche around computers. He chose ASU because of the mountains, the cooler weather, the outdoors, and the decent football program.



Mikayla Sage is from Maiden, NC where she attended Maiden High School and graduated in 2015. Mikayla is a computer science major, and her favorite subject is math. She enjoys snowboarding, playing guitar, as well as playing video games. She decided to pursue a degree in computer science, because she loves coding and has always been interested in computers. She ultimately would like to be a video game programmer. She chose ASU due to the amazing Computer Science Department and the snowboarding team is great as well.



Scott Shuffler is from Lexington, NC and attended West Davidson High School from which he graduated in 2008. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is anything but physics. Scott's interests are coffee, reef aquariums, music, programming, web design, and running. He decided to pursue computer science after his mom picked it for him. He was attached to ASU because of the surrounding landscape.



Cameron Small is from Apex, NC where he attended Apex High School and graduated in 2016. He is a computer science major, and his favorite subject is computer science/programming. He enjoys playing video games, classical music, camping/hiking, and superhero movies. He decided to pursue a computer science degree, because while growing up he loved computers and video games. Once he started coding he enjoyed the freedom that it gave him to make and do anything he wanted. He chose ASU, because he loves the environment, and he is not a big fan of cities.



Christopher Smith is from Granite Falls, NC and graduated from Caldwell High School in 2011. Chris is majoring in computer science. His favorite subjects are computer science and mathematics. He enjoys football, motorsports, listening to rock music, Southpark, The Simpsons, and Futurama. Chris decided to pursue a computer science degree after taking computer science and business courses in high school and at CCC&TI. Chris always wanted to attend ASU, but the associate program at CCC&TI was the big selling point due to complete class transfer.



Jacob Sterrett is from Franklin, NC where he attended Rabun Gap Nacoochee School and graduated in 2015. He is majoring in physics/pre-engineering, and his favorite subject is science. He enjoys swimming, golf, backpacking, fishing, and off-roading. He decided to pursue an education in physics, because he enjoys building and designing things, so he thought a good fit would be engineering. He chose ASU because of the mountain setting which is similar to home, and he is a perfect distance away from home.



James Ward is from Salter Path, NC where he attended West Carteret High School and graduated in 2015. James is a computer science major, and his favorite subject is coding. He enjoys surfing, skateboarding, videogames, reading, and sports. He decided to pursue computer science, because he was always fascinated by modern technology. He chose ASU, because the people are very friendly and it was originally his secondary university when he applied to schools.



Ian Watts is from Boone, NC where he attended Watauga High School and graduated in 2015. He is majoring in computer science, and his favorite subject is science. He enjoys playing baseball and ROTC. He decided to pursue computer science, because he thinks it will be very crucial in the future which may be dominated by electronics, and he finds it very interesting. He chose ASU, because he loves the location since he is from the area, and he is close to his family.



Preston Wilson is from Fleetwood, NC and attended Ashe County High School where he graduated from in 2014. He is majoring in computer science, and he enjoys the computer science classes, but he also enjoys religious studies as well. Preston enjoys playing video games, watching Netflix, reading tech reviews, and working with animals. He decided to pursue an education in computer science, because he loves working with computers and doing math, which made it the right choice for him. He was attracted to ASU, because it was close to home, both of his parents went there, the students and faculty were friendly, and it was significantly cheaper than the other institutions he was considering.



Michael Yang is from Chapel Hill, NC where he attended East Chapel Hill High School and graduated in 2011. He is majoring in computer science with a minor in both physics and mathematics. His favorite subject is computer science. He enjoys sports including snowboarding and lacrosse, playing PC games, and he is also a big fan of Marvel Cinematic Universe. He decided to pursue an education in computer science, because he enjoyed taking computer science courses over his original physics courses. He was attracted to ASU, because he loved the atmosphere here and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
