    • Comprehensive final exam will occur from 9-11am. Take home part of the final is due. Be sure that you have turned in the reference packet I gave you for your mathematician, as I am still missing many of these. Outstanding extra credit opportunities due.

    May 9 - Thur
    1. Reading Day - Revisions (you must ALSO turn in your original graded reports and graded checklists) for Ben F report, Statistics Detective Persuasive Report and What is a Mathematician? writing assignments due by 5pm.
    2. For the Mathematician assignment, the packet I gave you (with readings on your mathematician) must be turned back in to me in order to satisfy the last checklist point (#40) -- "final version turned in on or before reading day as a computer file and as 2 paper copies (your first draft with my comments on them along with the new version). The final version should encorporate suggestions made by Dr. Sarah and the class.
      The computer file of the worksheet on your mathematician must be e-mailed to Dr. Sarah as an attachment on campus pipeline to [email protected]
      Any paper references given to you and additional references that you found will be given back to Dr. Sarah by this time too.
    3. Retakes of WebCT quizzes 6 (unlimited number of tries allowed), 7 and 8 due by 11:55pm

    • Bring stock packet, tests 1 and 2 to lab. Work on the homework due Thursday.

    1. Review recent material via Shape of Our Universe readings in preparation for oral quiz on the material.
    2. Take WebCT quizzes 6 and 7.
    3. WebCT quiz 8 on the shape of the universe will be available and due on reading day.

    Apr 29 - Mon
    1. Bring your stock packet to lab.
    2. Read Heart of Math p. 288-319 and prepare a brief summary to turn in.
    3. WebCT quiz 7 on perspective drawing, Homer, Heart of Math reading, geometry of the earth questions 1-7, 2D universes lab, and class activities on Thursday Apr 25 (see highlights page) will be available but not due until reading day.

    Apr 25 - Thur
    1. Make sure that you have completely read through all of the web links for Problem 0 f the earth and universe - be prepared to answer questions on these.
    2. Review Tuesday's material on the answers to Problems 1-7 of the geometry of the earth and universe - be prepared to answer questions on them.
    3. Presenters (Ramanujan, Rudin, Morgan, and Daubechies) will give me their graded worksheets (suggestions for improvement are part of the grade) in alphabetical order by first name.

    Apr 23 - Tues
    1. Bring your earth and universe report (2 copies, but 1 report per group) which is due at the beginning of class! No lates allowed on this assignment
    2. Bring 1 ball per group (that you won't mind drawing on) to class - the ball should already inflated and should be between 6 inches and a foot in diameter.
    3. If you have masking tape, bring that too. If you have a marker, bring that too.
    4. Worksheets (Ramanujan, Rudin, Morgan, and Daubechies) and suggestions for improvement will be given to the presenters.

    1. You may wish to ge a head start on the IDS Viewpoint lab reading, especially if you are a slow reader.

    1. Read through Fifty-Five Culteral Reasons Why Too Few Women Win at Mathematics by Patricia C. Kenschaft from Winning Women into Mathematics, 1990, p. 11-15.
    2. Review Kenschaft's paper (above), stats on women and minorities in mathematics (from class), and Andrew Wiles and Carolyn Gordon and their mathematics for WebCT quiz 5.
    3. Bring your stock packet to lab.
    4. Stats test revisions and grades assignment (see pages that are attached to your test) for +4/72 = +5.6/100 due at 5pm

Carefully re-read through the What is a Mathematician? segment handout that I gave you, and from the main web page find and skim through the web references for your mathemtician, the worksheet checklist, the presentation checklist, PowerPoint Tips and finally skim through any paper references that I might have given to you.

    1. Bring your calendar to lab, especially if you must miss any class between April 4 and April 18th and think about who you might want to work with on the next major project (groups of 2).
    2. Consider that the last day to drop the course is Monday March 25th. Re-examine the attendance policy and evaluate your success in this course with the help of your test revisions grades assignment and tell me if you are considering dropping BEFORE you are assigned a topic for the next segment in lab.

    2. How do you know p. 185 #6 (try examples of small data sets of 3 or 4 points to try and see which measure of center would be best in each case)
    3. Do 2 histograms (1 for each gender) for the timed MRT class data each having 3 classes of width 1 each [ 0 less than or equal to score < 1, 1 less than or equal to score < 2, and 2 less than or equal to score < 3]
    4. WebCT quiz 4 (on the paper version I'm giving you - will not be turned in) questions 1-6.

    • Read The Heart of Mathematics pages ix-xii AND 583-589 and prepare a brief summary to turn in. Also, when summarizing the section "Totally-Secret - A Survey Method Guaranteeing Total Anonymity (585-587) make sure that you could use your summary to do problems with it.

    1. Real life rates - Either go to a bank or search on the web to find real interest rates on... savings, checking & money market accounts, cds (certificate of deposit), credit card rates, & student, house and car loan rates. Write up or print out your findings.
    2. Heart of Mathematics p. 540-541 (How to Get Rich Quick as a Stock Whiz) - read and prepare a brief summary to turn in

    1. Web based problems need to use Internet Explorer . Be sure to show work for EVERY entry: Problem 9 - the answers are correct, Problem 10 - the answers are correct. Be sure that you explain how each calculation is completed. Also note that row 0 of the table is not supposed to be filled in - fill in rows 1 and 2.
    2. What would have happened if I had waited until today to buy the condo? Assume that the price of the condo stayed the same (which it wouldn't have!) What is the monthly payment if we use today's mortage rate of approximately 7.125%. How much would I pay in total? How much of that would be interest? (I obtained this rate at Bank of America Page by choosing Conventinal Fixed and looking at the 30 year rate.)
    3. If I can afford to save $100 per month for a $50000 car, in an account compounding monthly at 8%, then how long will it take for me to save up?

    1. Study for WebCT quiz 2 - Review all of your class notes and homework. Review simple interest, lump sum, periodic payment and loan payment formulas and philosophy of formulation. Be able to match a problem to the correct formula, and also match a problem to the correct answer using only common sense (units of the answer and comparison with other problems). You may bring a "cheat sheet" with you.

    1. Need Internet Explorer for Web problem 5 - the answers are $3547.71 and $3452.87 - the interest rate should not be rounded as this will result in a slightly different answer. Web problem 6 - the answer is $216.59, Web problem 7 - the answer is 4.35 years, and Web problem 8 - the answers are 3.93 years, 4.17 years and later NOT sooner. Be sure to explain the answers using our formulas from class.

    • For the WebCT quiz, study the syllabus, Dr. Sarah's Office Hours link, Wile E. Coyote, the history of interest, and the 2 posters: come in to office hours to introduce yourself, read the poster with the orange (the fruit) on it which is located outside my door, and read the "Mathematics is Power" poster inside my office. The posters will also be on the quiz.

    1. Use Internet Explorer for Web problem 3 and Web problem 4. Be sure to explain the answers using our formulas from class (which is slightly different than the formula on the web).
    2. Put in $37 each month for 2 years, at 12.99% compounded monthly. Compare this with putting in $37 and leaving it there for 2 years, at 12.99% compounded monthly. What is the total amount that you will end up with in each case? How much of that is interest ($) in each case?

    2. To be completed sometime after Tuesday's class but before Thursday's class (see lab 1 for additional computer directions). From campus pipeline, go into WebCT and click on the bulletin board link to read any messages from Dr. Sarah in the Attention from Dr. Sarah forum. In Monday's lab, you posted a bulletin board message to the forum containing just you and Dr. Sarah. From this forum, read your message, read Dr. Sarah's reply to your message, and then compose a second message to the forum containing just you and Dr. Sarah to be sure that you know how to post questions to this forum outside of lab. You may click on the Update Listing link to be sure that your message went through. Click on the Home Link. Click on Grades and Tracking Info. Click on Tracking Participation. Under Discussions, you should see that Original Posts has a Count of at least 2, and you should see that Articles Read has a Count of at least 2. You and Dr. Sarah have access to this information.

    1. Get a scientific calculator (with y^x, x^y, or ^), a looseleaf notebook to organize handouts, notes, and your work, and the two course textbooks (You will probably have to bring your syllabus and show this upstairs in order to obtain the Heart of Math textbook).
