  • Real life rates - Collect information that you receive in the mail, search on the web and/or go to a bank to find real interest rates on...
            savings,                                                 checking accounts,
            cds (certificate of deposit),                     credit card rates,
            student loan rates,                                   house loan (mortgage) rates,
            and car loan rates.
    Write up your findings and be sure to include the source of each rate.

  • If you didn't finish the problems in class, finish them and be prepared to present them (HDYK p. 92-94 numbers 9, 14, 21 and 24, and p. 103 number 8)
  • Work on homework for the rest of the week.

  • Work on WebCT quizzes, Ben Franklin report, and Tuesday's real-life rates assignment and come prepared to continue working on these at the end of class.

  • If we can afford to save $100 per month for a $50,000 car, in an account compounding monthly at 8%, then how long will it take to save up? Setup the formula for the problem but do not solve. If I told you that the answer was approximately 18.38 years would that make sense? Show work to explain why.
  • What will our monthly payment be if we take out a car loan at 8% compounded monthly for $50,000 for 18.38 years? What is the interest paid over the life of the loan? How much more do we pay in total when compared to saving up $100 a month for 18.38 years?

  • Condo hw - Finish up to the portion that says Monday Lab Work.

Be sure to show work for EVERY entry on a piece of paper to turn in: Web Problem 1     Web Problem 2 Be sure that you explain how each calculation is completed (you may wish to review class notes and HDYK p. 95-103). Also note that row 0 of the table at the bottom is not supposed to be filled in - fill in rows 1 and 2.

  • Put in $37 each month for 2 years, at 12.99% compounded monthly. Compare this with putting in $37 and leaving it there for 2 years, at 12.99% compounded monthly. What is the total amount that you will end up with in each case? How much of that is interest ($) in each case?

  • Do 2 histograms (1 for each gender) for the timed MRT class data each having 3 classes of width 1 each:
              0 less than or equal to score < 1 (ie a score of 0)
              1 less than or equal to score < 2
              2 less than or equal to score < 3
  • Take try 1 of WebCT quiz 6
  • Use the handout I gave you to calculate your course average (turn this sheet in).

  • Web readings for lab - important for your success in lab - read 2-D Universes Readings, and carefully read the entire Computer Information Sheet again. Be sure that you can get into WebCT by following the directions. Test this out to make sure.
  • Study for WebCT quizzes which we will take in lab: Review the syllabus, past homework, web readings, and class notes and activities.

  • Read Heart of Math pp. p. 288-299 and come prepared to discuss this in class.
  • Go over the answers to the problems we went over on Tuesday and be prepared to answer them if called on.

  • Be sure that you have made it into office hours for your short conference by now.
    ** Geometry of the Earth and Universe report** due at the start of class (assigned on Aug 31)
    Bring 1 ball per group of 2 (that you won't mind drawing on) - the ball and should be between 6 inches and a foot in diameter, and it should be round, smooth and the type of ball that has already been completely inflated in the store (so that it does not have a lot of give). Also, If you have masking tape and/or markers, bring them.

  • Bring your calculator, 3-ring binder notebook, hole puncher and all handouts I give you to classes and labs until otherwise notified.
