    1. Look at the entrance survey and revisit your thoughts about these questions. In addition, think about what style of doing mathematics is most rewarding for you. (No written work is due - just your thoughts).
    2. Bring the following to lab: tests 1 and 2, and your stock packet.
    3. Study for WebCt quiz 8 by reviewing Homer part 1, Homer part 2, web readings from the shape of the universe lab and recent class notes (from 11/15 up through now).
    4. In lab we will work on a review lab which is due at the end of the class.
    5. Quizzes 6 and 7 due by 11:55pm (your grade is the highest of the (up to) 5 times that you take each of these quizzes.)

    • Final draft of Statistics Detective Persuasive Report DUE at 5pm. You must turn in your original draft and the graded checklist too. Final draft is 80% of this major writing assignment grade. You may work with at most 1 other person and turn in 1 per group. See revision suggestions on the WebCT posting. If you bring drafts into office hours, I am happy to give you additional suggestions.

    Nov 26 - Mon
    1. Bring your stock packet to lab.
    2. Read Heart of Math p. 288-319 and prepare a brief summary to turn in. The book is on reserve in the library or in my office.
    3. Study for WebCT quiz 7 on perspective drawing, Heart of Math reading, Escher and the geometry of the earth questions 1-7
    4. In lab we will work on WebCt quiz 7, the shape of the universe lab, and do stock update number 3.

    Nov 20 - Tues
    • Final worksheets due by 5pm for your mathematician. (Worth 50% of this major writing assignment grade.) You must turn in 2 paper copies and a computer copy along with the graded checklist from draft 1. Please return any references that I photocopied for you on your mathematician so that they can be re-used (in order to save paper).

    1. In lab, we will work on Spheres and GPS - How it Works, Homer part 2 (due in lab) and WebCT quiz 6 total on the What is a Mathematician segment (study these questions and the trends and statistics that we discussed).

    3. In lab, we will work on "Dodge Ball". You will discover a winning strategy for player 2, and will write this up before we start presentations. Your lab grade will be based on the clarity, depth and correctness of your winning strategy (1 per group of 2). Then, presentations and worksheets on George Cantor and Ramanujan.
    4. Statistics test revisions and grades assignment (already attached to your test) due at 6pm

    1. Read Heart of Math p. 74-78 (The Story of Fermat's Last Thm thru the end of section 2.3) and 540-541 (How to Get Rich Quick as a Stock Whiz) and prepare a brief summary to turn in. Book is on reserve in the library or in my office.
    2. In lab we will begin the geometry of the earth and universe segment, take WebCT quiz 5 total on Andrew Wiles and Carolyn Gordon and their mathematics (your grade is the highest of the (up to) 5 times that you take this quiz before Nov 19), and work on a MathSciNet search (only works from school) for modern mathematicians, and other searches for papers by your mathematician. If time remains, you may work on the mathematician project or the geometry report due at the begining of class on Tuesday.

    1. Re-read the What is a Mathematician? handouts, including the assignment and the references that I gave you on your mathematician.
    October 22 - Monday
    1. Read the What is a Mathematician? handouts, including the assignment and the references that I gave you on your mathematician. Work on draft 1 of the Statistics Detective Persuasive Report.
    2. In lab, we will go over Microsoft PowerPoint features for your presentations, and learn about Andrew Wiles and Fermat's Last Theorem. If time remains, you can work on the What is a Mathematician? segment.
    October 16 - Tuesday
    October 15 - Monday
    1. Study for Statistics test by reviewing WebCT quiz 4 (be sure that you really understand each and every problem and solution, ie that you really understand WHY each answer is correct or incorrect) and the review sheet material.
    2. Bring your calendar to lab, especially if you must miss any class between October 30th and November 8th.
    3. Consider that the last day to drop the course is Wednesday, October 17th. Tell me if you are considering dropping BEFORE you are assigned a topic for the next segment in lab.
    4. In lab we will go over an interactive linear regression applet, work on the 2nd major writing assignment, being a statistics detective. Begin the What is a Mathematician segment, by assigning topics and presentation dates.
    5. WebCT quiz 4 retakes are DUE just before midnight

    • If you haven't already turned this in, turn in the worksheets on modular arithmetic, and the Mean, Median and Mode lab by 5pm. Also, make sure you have completed stock update #2, but don't turn this in. (Do keep saving that e-mail with the data, and keep bringing the stock packet to lab).
     
    October 4 - Thursday
    1. Heart of Math read p. 593-595 (Measures of Central Tendency thru end of the section)
    2. How do you know p. 185 #6 (try examples of small data sets of 3 or 4 points to try and see which measure of center would be best in each case)
    3. Do 2 histograms (1 for each gender) for the timed MRT class data each having 3 classes of width 1 each [ 0 less than or equal to score < 1, 1 less than or equal to score < 2, and 2 less than or equal to score < 3]
    4. WebCT quiz 4 (the paper version I'm giving you) questions 1-6.
    5. WebCT quiz 3 total due just before midnight

    1. Finance Test revisions (see answers - 2nd last sheet on your test) due by 5pm

    1. Reading on p. 83-87 from the Heart of Mathematics DUE (Crazy Clocks and Checking Out Bars up thru the page with the Clairvoyant Kleenex Consultant) AND bring to lab.
    2. In lab, we will work on modular arithmetic , Mean, Median and Mode lab, and stock market update #2.
    September 28 - Friday
    1. Ben Franklin final version due by 5pm - see final guidelines and checklist
    2. If you didn't already turn it in, turn in "stock market update #1" stapled packet, and make sure that you have also completed the last page of the stock market part 1 handout (which is attached to the update page) - 2 Web Graphs that show that different representations of similar data can be used to illustrate conflicting viewpoints
    September 27 - Thursday
    1. Read The Heart of Mathematics pages ix-xii AND 583-589. Also, summarize the section "Totally-Secret - A Survey Method Guaranteeing Total Anonymity (585-587) so that you could use your summary to do problems with it.
    2. If you didn't already read this in lab, then read the stock reading and quantitative literacy, which can be accessed from the main web page.
    September 25 - Tues
    • Real life rates DUE at the beginning of class
      • Either go to a bank or search on the web to find real interest rates on... savings, checking & money market accounts, cds (certificate of deposit), credit card rates, & student, house and car loan rates. Write up or print out your findings.
    September 24 - Mon
    1. Pineapple and pinecones
      • Bring a whole UNCUT pineapple (1 per group of 2 is fine) to lab. Also, if you can find pinecones, bring those too.
      • If you have a stopwatch or regular watch, bring that to lab too.
    2. In lab, we will work on Lab Directions - Collecting Data,   Class Data Collection Sheet,    reading - intro to the market,    stock market update #1,    quantitative literacy, and the pineapple part of the lab.

    • Homer's Taxes and Stock Part 1 (along with graph and Stock HW) due if you haven't already turned it in.

    1. WebCT quiz 2 first try in lab
      • Be able to match lump sum, periodic payment, or loan payment formula to a problem. Also, using common sense and units, be able to match answers to a problem (without doing the calculation). You will also have some other questions on things we did in class/lab and a question on the new poster to the left of my 326 office door
    2. In lab we will work on Dr. Sarah's Condo Part 2 which we will finish in class on Tuesday the 11th.
